Summer Starts with Good Intentions (and Then… Snacks Take Over)

Summer always starts with a plan.
We’re going to do fun activities. We’re going to get outside every day. We’re going to limit screen time and somehow become the kind of family that makes fruit trays look effortless.
And then reality shows up around day three.
The snacks are gone faster than expected. Bedtime becomes a suggestion. Someone is outside barefoot at 9:40 p.m. for no reason at all. And suddenly everyone is just… in it.
If this sounds familiar, you’re in good company.
Summer doesn’t need to be perfect to be good. Kids actually don’t need every hour scheduled—they need a rhythm they can trust. A little structure, a little freedom, and a lot of grace for the chaos in between.
For some children, especially those who have experienced stress, change, or instability, predictable rhythms aren’t just helpful—they’re calming. They help kids feel safe enough to relax, play, and just be kids.
So if your summer looks more like mismatched socks, popsicles for lunch, and “what day is it?” energy… that’s okay.
You’re still doing it right.
